Children now can go cashless with Tune Card debit card

Soon children in Malaysia as young as 12 years old will be able to swipe a debit card and leave their cash at home. Tune Money Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Tengku Zafrul Aziz said applications for the prepaid Visa Tune Card would be made available for children aged between 12 to 18 years.

The Tune Card is a debit card that gives instant online approval with no credit check and allows for cash withdrawals at ATMs worldwide and the annual fee is RM9.99 but credit cards are allowed only for those aged 18 and above.

“Children can buy things for themselves and it will be easier for parents to transfer money to their children. They won’t have to give them so much cash. This way, parents will be able to easily monitor and control their children’s spending, as every transaction will be recorded. We believe there is a niche market, especially for parents who have teenage children studying overseas,” Tengku Zafrul said.

The world’s ICT giants is coming back to Kuala Lumpur

Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Intel chairman Dr Craig Barrett will be among the popular global personalities at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia is the first South-East Asian nation to host this great event, often called as the Olympics of ICT.

Other personalities include Blue Brain Project chairman Dr Robert Bishop, International Telecommunication Union secretary-general Dr Hamadoun Toure, Dr Robert Atkinson of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Robert Carter of FedEx and Douglas Merrill of Google.

More than 2,500 delegates from over 80 countries are expected to attend the meeting, which will address issues like technology’s impact on education, innovation, technopreneurship and the future of the Internet.

“The congress will bring the world’s ICT giants to Malaysia,” Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis told Malaysian journalists on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting here.

He said Malaysia must continue to develop its ICT industry, particularly its technology entrepreneurs, as innovative knowledge could help drive the future economy. Dr Jamaluddin said innovative strategies could be used to develop industries as the country could not just depend on exports of commodities like rubber and palm oil or its human expertise.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on leadership qualities

“How he handles his failure will demonstrate whether he really has the qualities,” Said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad the former prime minister of Malaysia. Dr Mahathir also gave several attributes of a good leader, one of which is that the person should not seek to blame others for failures, but to admit his own culpability. He also added that a leader should be modest and not seek praise and glory.

Dr Mahathir said a leader must have ideas on the direction he wanted to lead, ideas on the things that he and his followers must do or achieve, and ideas on the improvements of their well-being and their surroundings. Equally important, he must know how to turn his ideas into reality. He said the rise and fall of great nations was due to good leadership. Dr Mahathir said no matter how people tried to show the qualities and characters of a good leader, it would still not guarantee that they would not make mistakes.

“When the leaders are incompetent, the countries would fall. The people may be the same, the background and the wealth and resources may be the same, but when leaders are incompetent or just plain bad, then great nations, even great empires, can fall. And, similarly, no matter how much we learn about the qualities which make a good leader, it is still possible for us to choose the wrong one.” said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
